Hi my name is Pete and I am one of the founders of InsuranceDoesMatter because I wanted to have one central objective place to read about insurance (read more about our mission here).
Where to start? I think the first step would to detail my situation regarding insurance needs and coverage as of today. As I gain more knowledge, I’m certain that many more updates will be useful!
I will elaborate into each one over time and post updates, be sure to join our free newsletter to get all the latest updates:) I’ve also written about my insurance company wish list, which will hopefully become reality at some point:)
I purchased a term life insurance with my wife, one with my business partner and I have one provided by my employer.
Nothing for now, I will explain why in the near future.
My wife and I own one car and do have car insurance of course. I also frequently rent cars while travelling and use both that insurance and the one provided by my credit card when doing that.
I did not have home insurance for some time while renting an apartment but later on I did get one and after moving to a townhouse, I got a new one as well. I got a discout since I’m doing business with the same company as I do for car insurance.
As I live in Canada, I do not need as much health insurance although I do have supplemental insurance in my employer’s plan. I am considering moving back to the US at some point so that would obviously mean big changes in terms of life insurance.
I actually do believe I have some coverage through my employer but shame on me for not knowing exactly, I will clearly find out more:)
I currently mainly use the protection offered by my credit card but I did have a close call after having a trip planned to Japan on the day of the 2011 Tsunami in Japan which obviously got cancelled. I got reimbursed for most of my expenses despite having no travel insurance (even event ticket insurance) but I learned a few lessons.
Critical Illness Insurance
Same as disability insurance: I actually do believe I have some coverage through my employer but shame on me for not knowing exactly, I will clearly find out more:)
